Reasons You Might Feel Unsure About Joining a Group:
1. I'm not really an activist
Right now, we need EVERYONE. This means YOU. Even if you don't like protests or phone calls or the word "activist." We still need you, now, exactly as you are. There are so many ways to contribute. We need people who love to make art and people who love to plan parties, people who love to research and people who love to write, people who know how to wire sound systems and people who know how to fundraise. Take the quiz, join an org, and find out just how much you have to offer.
2. I'm already signing the petitions and going to protests. Do I really need to join?
That’s really awesome that you're doing that! While participating in one-time events and petitions is great, we can maximize our effectiveness by committing to organizations with the history, skills, infrastructure and organizers who can build strategic campaigns and situate actions within a larger plan. Our skills and energy go exponentially farther in an organization. Progressive organizations who have been doing this work for a long time will help support us to stay in the work through the hard times, disappointments and losses ahead.
3. I don't have the time
Whatever time you've got is just right. 1 hour a week? 1 hour a month? Whatever it is, if you join an organization, that 1 hour will go exponentially farther than trying to do 1 hour of action by yourself.
4. Maybe in a few months. Why join now?
If not now, when? We want to inoculate ourselves and as many people as we can from the pull to normalize, and the sooner the better!
Reasons TO JOIN:
1. Community
Getting involved in an organization is a really great way to meet cool people like you! Your new friends await you.
2. Power in Numbers
When progressive organizations lobby, march or even stuff envelopes, they have more power the more members they have! If you feel concerned about your own rights or the rights of others, the best thing to do is join up with others.
3. Learn New Skills
If you want to, you may be able to learn new skills by joining an organization. Professional development workshops cost TONS of money, but when you join an org, they may be able to teach you skills like organizing, lobbying, fundraising, facilitating and more-- for free (or the cost of your membership)!
4. It Keeps You Going
This is a tough political time and we're going to continue to experience a lot of losses. To put it plainly... it's gonna be depressing. As individuals, we might feel pulled to hide under a blanket. But organizations keep going. You can always say you need to take a break, and they'll hold you accountable to come back (when you're ready).
